A thumbnail sketch on a napkin or a full set of drawings, drafting and design are a practical part of any job.  Used properly these can reduce uncertainty and mistakes.   When design is not considered at the start it is usually introduced in time by way of costly corrections.    

Asuming you will be living with your construction or renovations for some time it only makes sense to carefully consider several possible uses of the space and make the best possible choices.
